I think this order effect may differ across cultures, i.e. East and West. In fact, I think it's possible for both individualistic and collectivistic tendencies to arise simultaneously. There's always a tension between the two, of course, and I agree with you that it's not either-or.

I also appreciate and wholeheartedly agree that true solidarity and engagement, especially in this day and age, have to be rooted in a physical space.
